The success of the annual Newton Stewart & Minnigaff Traditional Music & Dance Festival confirmed that it was an event that, with the right support, had the potential to eventually sustain itself. It was also having a very important positive impact on the local economy, as well as providing significant cultural and social benefits.
However, in order to become self-sustaining the festival would need to continue to develop and grow; expanding its programme and finding ways to generate new, additional, income to support that development.
With grant funding becoming increasingly competitive, and the local authority slowly withdrawing funding for arts, culture and heritage projects, it was clear that a solution would need to be found.
